Rockwall’s Team Tennis Jackets lost their opening district match to 9-time state champion Highland Park last week, but have had some outstanding matches against top teams to kick off the 2010 season.
The Jackets opened with a tri-match against Duncanville and Fort Worth Trinity, losing to Duncanville 10-9 and defeating Trinity 22-1. Rockwall actually had more wins than Duncanville if all matches would have counted.
RHS then traveled to East Texas to take on Longview and Kilgore. The Jackets only lost one match versus Longview and dominated Kilgore as well.
Rockwall fell short in the district opener against Highland Park, but did get a big win by No. 1 boys singles player Brandon Hogland. Hogland knocked off the Scots No. 1 in two straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
According to head coach Lana Fulkerson, “The kids played well and took home more overall games than in recent years. We have a young, strong, talented team this year and I look forward to a great season.”
RHS followed with a non-district match against powerful Lake Highlands last Friday at the Wilkerson-Sanders tennis facility.
Lake Highlands defeated the Jackets 13-6 with several very close matches that could have gone either way.
Rockwall was scheduled to face Wylie in Rockwall on Tuesday night pending weather conditions.
