Miranda Larkin blocked 10 shootout shots in Rockwall’s 2-1 victory over Wylie East for the Class 4A Sectional Championship on her 17th birthday.

Rockwall’s soccer girls were knocked from the Class 4A playoffs on Tuesday when Carrollton Creekview defeated the Lady Jackets 2-1 at Richardson’s Eagle-Mustang Stadium.

Creekview took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by T.J. Lambeth in the 13th minute after a series of aggressive attacks.

But, Rockwall answered in the 29th minute with a goal by Maddie Bertrand off an assist from Kendyl Pirkey to tie the score at 1-1.

The Lady Jackets just missed a score on an attempt by Niki McKnight in the 34th minute when the kick sailed over the crossbar.

Creekview then kicked the winning goal in the 38th minute when Alexiz Magro-Malo ripped a goal into the corner of the net off a throw-in.

Rockwall outshot Creekview 10-5 in the second half, but could never find the goal. Kayla Smith smashed a strong kick to the left corner with 9:31 left in the game, but a great save by the Creekview keeper ended the Lady Jackets best scoring attempt.

“We came out a little flat tonight, but the girls always find a way to bounce back,” said head coach Melissa Garcia. “We didn’t fill in gaps like we should have and you have to do that against good teams. That was the difference.”

Rockwall entered the regional quarterfinal game after winning Class 4A Area and Sectional Championships last week.

RHS defeated Forney 3-2 last Wednesday at City Bank Stadium in Forney for the Area Championship.

Berkley Talley smashed a goal on a free kick in the 13th minute, Savanah Warnick ripped one off an assist from Kayla Smith in the 24th minute and Warnick scored again in the 28th minute off a corner kick by Talley.

Forney came back to score twice in the second half, but it wouldn’t be enough.

In Rockwall’s 2-1 shootout win over Wylie East for the Class 4A Sectional Championship, the ladies tied the score at 1-1 on a Kayla Smith goal off an assist from McKnight in the 54th minute.

After two scoreless overtime periods, the battle went into a shootout. The score was still tied after the regular five-player shootout, with East scoring once and Bethany Schomin scoring for Rockwall.

And then, Rockwall’s 11th extra kicker, Niki McKnight, dribbled past the keeper and nailed a goal for the victory.

Rockwall keeper, Miranda Larkin, celebrated her 17th birthday by blocking 10 shootout shots to spark the win.
