Rockwall’s wrestling team edged Rockwall-Heath 33-31 in a cross-town dual pitting the two wrestling powers at RHHS gymnasium last Wednesday.
Both teams won seven weight-class bouts each, but Rockwall captured three matches by fall to Heath’s two in the highly-competitive meet.
Rockwall’s Chase Howerton won by fall over Heath’s Dyrius Toliver in the 106-pound division, Brandon Smith won the 113-pound division by fall over Jace Roland and James Taylor defeated Nathan Curry in the 152-pound class by fall.
Heath’s Zarik Anderson won by fall over Alex Moore in the 120-pound class and Nick Rose defeated Rockwall’s Kade McMahon by fall in the 138-pound weight class.
Andrew Hyde of Rockwall won by technical fall 19-2 over Alyck Hodge in the 132-pound division, Heath Terry won by major decision 17-6 versus Heath’s Bryce Pope and Heath’s Jacob Makelke bested Everett Weddle of Rockwall by 9-0 major decision.
Winning matches by decision for Rockwall were Jonathan Jonas (4-2) over Alan Bellah in the 145-pound division and Jackson Gray (8-5) over Quinten Wooten in the 182-pound class.
Posting victories for Heath were Steve Duncan (5-2) over Jonah Ramos in the 160-pound class, Zach Dobbins (14-3) over David Roland in the 195-pound division, Zacc Marek (10-7) over Dante Thomas in the 220-pound weight class and J.J. Nwigwe (5-2) over Armani Broussard in the 285-pound division.
The Jackets went on to claim the title of the Cougar Classic on Saturday for their fourth straight tournament win of the season.
Leading the way were champions James Taylor (152) and Jackson Gray (182), runnersup Brandon Smith (113) and Armani Broussard (285).
and third-place finishers Ty Thomas (220), Andrew Hyde (132), Alex Moore (120), Jonathan Jonas (145) and Everett Weddle (126).
Junior varsity champions included Chase Howerton, Kade McMahon, Tyler Tirevold, Fernando Olivarez, Kevin Smith and Josh Gray.
