After scoring a season-high in points during a 76-7 victory over North Mesquite, the 6-2 Rockwall Yellowjackets will face 5-2 Tyler Lee on Friday.
The opening kickoff for the District 11-6A football game is at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler.
Rockwall rolled up 592 total yards of total offense against North Mesquite, including 299 yards passing and 293 rushing.
Jacket quarterback Braedyn Locke was 19-of-28 passing for 258 yards and four touchdowns, upping his season total to 2,316 yards passing and 29 TD passes. Locke has completed 143 of 240 attempts with only four interceptions.
Freshman Lake Bennett spelled Locke at quarterback and was 5-of-8 passing for 41 yards and a touchdown.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who earlier in the day received his jersey from the high school All-American Bowl, led the Rockwall receivers with nine catches for 153 yards and four touchdowns, all of them throws from Locke. Smith-Njigba has now topped the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the season with 55 catches for 1,0267 yards and 18 touchdowns. Smith-Njigba is averaging 18.7 yards per catch and 146.6 yards receiving per game. The Ohio State commit also returned three punts for 142 yards, with a long gain of 56 yards.
Matthew Coleman caught the Jackets’ other touchdown pass against North Mesquite, a 2-yard pass from Bennett.
Jax Johnson caught three passes for 20 yards, Brenden Bayes caught two for 38, J.J. Williams caught two for 29 and Goodnews Iwuamadi caught two for 22.
Zach Henry led the Rockwall rushers with 145 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Henry leads Rockwall for the season with 654 yards and nine TDs rushing on 90 carries.
Khalil Catlett ran for 72 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Jackson Bennett ran for 23 yards and a TD on three carries. Matthew Hejny also ran for a touchdown as Rockwall totaled five rushing touchdowns.
Three different placekickers took turns kicking extra points. Ethan Spearman was 6-of-6, Rich McDermott was 3-of-3 and Michael James was 1-of-2.
Kobie Norman scored North Mesquite’s only touchdown on a 58-yard run in the second quarter.
Rockwall is now 3-1 in district play while Lee is 2-1. The Raiders have beaten Rockwall-Heath 39-34 and North Mesquite 35-17. They lost 18-14 to Mesquite.
Rockwall beat Lee 66-0 last year as Smith-Njigba caught seven passes for 218 yards and two TDs.
