MESQUITE - Rockwall's Jackets fell just short in their two opening-round games at the Wrangler-Pirate Holiday Basketball Classic at West Mesquite High School this week.
A slow start in Rockwalls' opening game against North Garland kept the Jackets from pulling out a win with three strong periods. North jumped out to a 24-8 first-period lead and held off the Jackets, who outscored the Raiders 29-21 in the final three quarters.
Hunter Jorgensen put up 14 points, Carson Brooks kicked in eight points and Griffin Frazier added eight points for Rockwall.
RHS then lost another game it could have won when West Mesquite downed the Jackets in a 36-35 heartbreaker.
A slow start plagued Rockwall again as West opened a 13-0 first-period lead before Rodney Watson dropped a 2-point jumper with 2:47 remaining in the opening period. Collin Schmucker followed with a free throw and Blake Sandlin drained a 3-pointer to pull the Jackets within nine after one quarter.
Wesley Davis kicked off the second period with five straight points and Jorgensen put up two to close the gap to four. Rockwall then offset a 2-point West shot with a Jorgensen 3-point shot and a 2-point put-back to take its first lead of the game at 18-17 with 2:48 left in the half.
The rest of the contest was back and forth with both teams taking numerous leads. Trailing 36-35 with .26 seconds left, Rockwall got the ball back when West Mesquite guard Soria stepped on the out-of-bounds line.
But, the Jackets failed to capitalize and gave the ball back on a steal to end the game.
Sandlin led Jacket scorers with 12 points, Jorgensen posted 10 and Davis added seven in the loss.
Rockwall was scheduled to play for seventh place on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the West Mesquite gymnasium.
