MESQUITE — District 10-4A co-leader West Mesquite ran up 35 first-half points and carried it to the final buzzer to defeat Rockwall-Heath 35-0 Thursday at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.

The Hawks kept it close for the first quarter, allowing the Wranglers only one score on a 68-yard pass from Kendal Thomas to Jawanza Mitchell.

But, the passing tandem of Thomas-to-Mitchell clicked again with 8:58 on the second-period clock on a 9-yard touchdown strike. It was the first of four unanswered second-quarter TDs by West Mesquite.

An interception at the 22-yard line led to a Thomas 5-yard TD run with 6:36 left, which was followed by a 19-yard TD completion from Jerome L'Heureaux to Demarko Grant and a 9-yarder from L'Heureaux to Mitchell.

The Hawks defense created two turnovers in the first half, but the offense was unable to capitalize. Everett Gilbert intercepted a Thomas pass at the 50 and returned it to the Wrangler 37 and Blake Gunderson recovered a fumble at the 43.

Heath also marched to the West Mesquite 9-yard line with 4:09 left in the third only to have the drive stopped by a Wrangler interception in the end zone.

DB Gary Meyers picked off a West Mesquite pass at the 22, but the Wranglers held on a 4th-and-3 at the 11 to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard late in the third period.

And Gunderson booked his second turnover of the contest when he intercepted a shovel pass with 10:00 remaining at the 32, but the Hawks couldn't turn it into points.

Greg Deloache recorded six tackles and one fumble recovery, Zach Gay posted six tackles and one fumble recovery, Preston Striegel six tackles, Jean Luc-Motlagh five and Garret Worsham five for the defense.

The Hawks will attempt to break into the district win column Friday when they square off against Richardson J.J. Pearce at Wilkerson-Sanders Memorial Stadium.

Pearce (1-4, 4-4) broke a 14-14 deadlock at Terrell last week with a 21-point second period and coasted to a 35-14 win. Michael Morse passed for 196 yards and three touchdowns for the Mustangs.
