The cheerleaders at Utley Middle School in Rockwall conducted a personal hygiene and toiletry drive for the Women In Need shelter.

An agency dedicated to supporting domestic violence victims in Rockwall and Hunt counties was able to assist dozens of area families celebrate Thanksgiving and the holiday season.

Women In Need, WIN, was hoping to provide 60 holiday baskets this year. The baskets were to include boxes of stuffing mix and instant potatoes;cans of cranberry sauce, corn, green beans, cream of mushroom soup, french onions and sweet potatoes; bags of marshmallows, bags of rolls, pie or cake mix, a package of butter, one dozen eggs, festive plates and napkins, and a laundry basket to store and tote the ingredients.

The agency announced this week that it was able to exceed its goal and was able to fill the shelves at its shelter for the holiday season.

WIN operates the domestic violence shelter for both counties. During Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, the agency provided vigil events at both courthouses, as well as luncheons to thank the first responders, law enforcement and volunteers with the agency and related organizations who deal with domestic violence issues every day. The agency reported more than 1,900 people were reached with WIN’s message during the month’s events.
