Two people died Thursday afternoon in a plane crash in Rockwall County.
Lt. Aaron McGrew with the Rockwall Police Department said officers were notified shortly after 1 p.m. of a single engine plane having crashed off of State Highway 66 between FM 549 and John King Boulevard.
“We investigated and located the crash site about 100 yards north of Highway 66,” McGrew said. “Two deceased individuals were also located at the scene.”
The highway was closed for a time while the site was secured in preparation for the arrival and investigation of by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board.
The highway was reopened to traffic shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday.
The deceased individuals have been identified, McGrew said, but the names were not immediately released pending the notification of next of kin.
McGrew also declined to divulge information concerning the type of aircraft, and its origin or destination.
“We are not releasing that information right now,” he said.
