Volunteers and sponsors are being sought for an effort to make sure veterans buried in an area cemeteries are remembered this Christmas.
Rest Haven Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 2005 Highway 66 East in Rockwall and Sacred Heart Cemetery, 3900 Rowlett Road in Rowlett, has scheduled Wreaths Across America ceremonies on Dec. 14.
Wreaths Across America is a nonprofit organization with a mission of remembering, honoring and teaching and is expected to conduct more than 1,600 similar events on National Wreaths Across America Day.
As of Tuesday morning, four local non-profit groups were helping sponsor the event at Rest Haven, which begins at 11 a.m. There were 354 wreaths sponsored, about 35 percent of the goal for the cemetery, with 650 more wreath sponsorships needed.
One local non-profit group was sponsoring the wreaths at Sacred Heart, which is hosting the event at noon, and as of Tuesday had sponsored 42 wreaths, with 97 more to go.
Volunteers are also needed at both locations to help lay the wreaths during the ceremonies.
The wreaths are available to be sponsored for $15 each, two for $30, five for $75, 10 for $150 or for a custom number.
