Roma's

Frieda Langston, left and her husband, John have traded in their teaching careers and embarked on keeping Rockwall’s only bookstore alive at Roma’s Bookstore.

Mystery. Intrigue. Romance. Adventure. That’s what lies within the walls of Roma’s Books, where thousands of books are waiting to be read.

Owner Frieda Langston and her husband, John purchased the store more June 2, 2005 from former owner Roma Faith, who owned it for 15 years.

The Langston’s are both retired teachers and wanted to keep the only bookstore in Rockwall alive after Roma chose to retire and sell it. The Langston’s didn’t change the name because everyone was familiar with it as Roma’s Books, Frieda said.

“This is totally different from teaching. It’s still involves people but before as a teacher I dealt with kids all of the time. It’s nice being able to help people. One of the reasons we bought it because Roma was either going to sell it or close it,” Frieda said.

Roma’s Books sells mostly paper backs but also sells hard back books, new and pre-read books, books that the Rockwall Independent School District and other area schools districts require students to read throughout the school year, audio books, and some gaming books. Roma’s books sells fiction, non-fiction, mysteries, westerns, children’s, romance, religious, science fiction, sports, cooking, horror, and travel books, to name a few. They also carry some books from Rockwall and area authors.

It also special orders books, which Frieda seems to have acquired the knack for.

“Bookstop in Mesquite sends people to her to find hard to find books,” John said of his wife. Frieda has had luck finding books for customers who have had trouble finding it from other bookstores, including finding one of only three books in the United States that a Dallas customer asked for, she said.

Their customers range in age from 8 to 80 and come from Rockwall, Sachse, Dallas to Greenville, Frieda said.

Roma’s Books offers up to 25 percent off the cover price of a book with its trade credit the store features.

The Langston’s can be found working at their business, sometimes 60 to 70 hours a week, both at home and at the office, which employees several people.

Even Faith herself, the store’s namesake, cannot stay away from her old haunt as she volunteers nine hours every week to help the Langstons.

Roma’s is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is located at 555 Interstate 30, in Rockwall Village off of the south Interstate 30 service road. For more information, call 972-771-6344.
