Stan and Krisie Whisenant live in the Buffalo Creek area of Heath and have eight horses currently training and racing. Their current prize is 3-year-old blueskiesnrainbows, a unique name for a powerful racehorse.
“We let our children name our animals, and our 5-year-old son, Jake, attended Dallas Christian School,” Krisie said. “His favorite song that he learned was ‘Blue Skies and Rainbows,’ so that’s the name he chose.”
The colt was purchased from a Kentucky stable by Stan in the fall of 2010 and half of the colt is owned by the Plano-based Bad Boy Racing, LLC. Already, blueskiesnrainbows has won more than $200,000 and will be competing in the 2012 33rd Running of the Louisiana Super Derby, a $500,000 Grade II Stakes Race. The Louisiana Super Derby is a prelude to the 2012 Breeders’ Cup World Championship, on of the biggest horse races in the world.
“If the horse wins on Saturday, he’ll be qualified to run in the Breeders’ Cup,” Krisie said.
Blueskiesnrainbows is trained by the sport’s top trainer, Bob Baffert, and is the favorite to win the Louisiana Super Derby. Jockey Joe Talamo will lead the horse out of the number three gate on Sunday. The colt last raced on July 4, winning the Grade II Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park, Cali. Blueskiesnrainbows performed well at the Grade I Santa Anita Derby, leading for much of the race before being caught in the stretch by future Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another.
Horseracing has been a passion for Stan since his childhood. His father was one of the top breeders in New Mexico. The Whisenants have 12 brood mares as part of their stable, Wizway Farms.
“He’s had horses for about eight years now,” Krisie said. “Horses are his passion.”
While the couple used to run all of their horses at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, most of them now run in California and Kentucky due to the higher prize money.
Krisie manages their racing stable, including vet bills, trainers, and race entry fees. The Whisenants also have three children between the ages of 3 and 7 years.
Note: blueskiesnrainbows did not place in the Louisiana Super Derby this past weekend. The race was won by Bourbon Courage.
