The original reports
Marquis White, Kairee Cooks, and Darion Brown were arrested in connection with the crime and robbery.
Affidavits filed in the case show that on May 16, 2017, around 2:40 a.m. a 911 call was made to report that "three black males had robbed a residence on South Maryland Avenue" and that Dakota Rex had been shot.
CPD officers responded and found Rex deceased, near the front door of the residents.
In attempting to recover physical evidence from the scene—a lone 9mm shell casing was found in the front yard.
Additionally, according to the affidavit, "a 9mm projectile was recovered from inside the home, having apparently traveled through Rex's body, into and out of another wall, then fell to the floor."
A witness allegedly told law enforcement that "three black males entered the home through the unlocked front door, each of them armed with handguns and each of them completely covered with masks, gloves, and other coverings," according to the affidavit.
CPD Deputy Chief Steve Cox reports that the home invasion was over marijuana.
"[The witness] said that one of the suspects said something to the effect of 'one of your friends told us that you had nice stuff' and 'you should pick better friends.'
The witness reportedly told the suspects he was calling 911 and that he and Rex were physically pushing the suspects out the front door when one of the suspects shot Rex.
Officers were told the suspects stole an Android tablet and Xbox controllers before they left.
The witness reportedly told law enforcement his home had been robbed in November of 2016 by “two armed black males.”
In November of 2018 Cooks was sentenced to15-years in prison following his guilty plea for his involvement. Brown has pleaded guilty but and is awaiting sentencing.
