Legrand C. Kirby IV of Rockwall was in the Rockwall County Jail Wednesday after he was arrested for shooting Darrell Irlanda outside of his home in the Signal Ridge development on May 24.

Kirby allegedly knocked on the door of Irlanda’s home in building 12 of the Signal Ridge condominium complex off of Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall while holding a semi-automatic rifle shortly before 10 p.m., said Lt. Carl Alsabrook of the Rockwall Police Department.

Kirby allegedly fired the gun through Irlanda’s front window and his glass front door while Irlanda was on the phone with a 9-1-1 dispatcher, Alsabrook said.

“Irlanda told the dispatcher,’I’ve got a man in the doorway with a machine gun.’ Irlanda then identified Kirby by his last name to the 9-1-1 dispatcher,” Alsabrook said.

Kirby also lives in the Signal Ridge development in building 18, Alsabrook said.

Kirby shot 55-year-old Irlanda in his upper right arm and then dropped his weapon. He walked behind Irlanda’s condominium to the Lake Ray Hubbard shore, Alsabrook said. Rockwall police officers found Kirby sitting quietly and calmly by the shore, Alsabrook.

Irlanda was taken by Rockwall County Emergency Management Services personnel to Baylor Hospital in Dallas, where he was treated.

Irlanda did not suffer any life threatening injuries, according to Alsabrook.

The incident may have been drug or alcohol related, Alsabrook said.

The 47-year-old Kirby is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The charge is a second degree felony.

If convicted, Kirby could serve two to 20 years in prison and may have to pay a fine up to $10,000.

Kirby’s bond is set at $100,000.

The case has been forwarded to the Rockwall County District Attorney’s Office.
