RHS coach, player chosen for all-star hoops contest

ROCKWALL — Rockwall boys head basketball coach Alan Simmons has been selected to coach the Texas All-Star team at the 49th edition of the Faith 7 Basketball Bowl in Shawnee, Oklahoma on June 7.

The game pits Oklahoma all-stars against Texas all-stars and will be played at the Noble Complex on the Oklahoma Baptist University campus with tipoff set for 7 p.m.

The bowl gets its name from the Faith 7 spacecraft, on which local Shawnee resident Gordan Cooper was an astronaut.

Players (10 from each state) are picked by the respective state coaches. Also coaching for the Texas squad is Rockwall assistant coach J.D. Mayo.

Historically, Texas coaches have been from the junior college ranks. Simmons and Mayo are the first high school coaches to lead the team.

The Bowl is a charity event, with all proceeds going to the Faith 7 Activity Center, which provides activities and training for mentally-challenged adults.

The game itself consists of four 10-minute quarters with both teams playing two units equally in each of the first three periods and coaches playing whoever they want in the final quarter.

Also representing Rockwall in the game will be Abilene Christian University commit and RHS standout Skyler Simmons.
