RHS, Heath boys rack up non-district wins

— RISD and Royse City boys basketball teams posted big wins at the 2013 Craig Bowers Memorial Tournament at the RCISD gymnasiums last Thursday before icy weather forced cancellation of the annual invitational.

Rockwall opened the tournament with a 55-50 win over Seagoville to advance to the quarterfinals, but that would be the only game the Jackets would play due to area-wide ice and sleet conditions that virtually shut down much of North Texas.

The Jackets built a 16-13 first-quarter lead, extended it to 32-29 at halftime after falling behind 24-21, logged a 45-37 lead after three periods and carried it to the 55-50 victory after Seagoville scored the final six points.

Austin Grandstaff led all scorers with 28 points, including seven three-point buckets, Skyler Simmons drained 11 points with three threes and Joseph Williams hit seven points to spark the Jacket win.

Heath kicked off strong at the tournament with a 57-44 victory versus Mesquite Poteet to send the Hawks to the quarterfinals before the remaining games were cancelled.

Tyler Zivney nailed a three-point shot to give Heath a 3-0 lead and the Hawks never looked back en route to the 13-point win.

Zivney finished with 17 points, including two treys, Jackson Zivney knocked down 14 points with three long range shots, Camron Talley put up seven points and David Keaton six points to lead the Hawks.

Host Royse City also booked an opening win with a 63-42 victory over Hallsville, as did the Royse City girls with a 56-32 victory over Greenville.

In non-district action on Tuesday, Rockwall won a 72-71 thriller over Naaman Forest after outscoring the Rangers 20-12 in the fourth quarter.

Grandstaff gunned in 36 points, Williams hit 15 and Simmons nailed 12 to lead the Jackets to the win.

Heath had little trouble with South Garland on Tuesday, building a 17-6 first-period lead and carrying it to the 71-52 victory.

Tyler Zivney and Jackson Zivney led the Hawks with 13 points each, Kelden Pruitt fired up 12 and Talley added nine in the 19-point win.
