Highland Park wins 10-4A track titles;area teams qualify for Region II in 46 events

ROYSE CITY - Highland Park captured both the boys and girls championships at the lightning-delayed District 10-4A Track and Field Meet last Wednesday and Thursday at the Royse City ISD Stadium.

Even after coaches from each school voted to move the meet up one day to avoid forecasted bad weather, the competition still had to be stopped on Thursday night due to lightning, with only the boys 1600 and the 4X400 relays remaining.

District officials suspended the meet at approximately 8:30 p.m. and waited over three hours while viewing radar and weather reports before resuming the meet at 11:50 p.m.

Highland Park's Lady Scots won all three relays along with the 1600, 3200, 200 and long jump to chalk up 201 1/2 points for the girls team title. Royse City finished second with 125 points, Heath third with 101 and Rockwall fourth with 73.

The Scots outdueled Royse City 128-119 1/2 for the boys team championship, with Greenville third (101) and Rockwall fourth (97 1/2). Heath finished sixth with 40 team points.

The Top-3 finishers in each event from the district meet advance to the Region II meet in Denton on May 1 and 2.

Teams from Rockwall, Heath and Royse City qualified athletes in 46 events for the regional competition.

Rockwall's Ryan Hughes won the gold medal in the boys pole vault with a new personal and stadium record 16-0 leap, Cody McCoy won the discus (130-09) and the 4X100 relay team finished first with its 43.34 clocking to lead the Jackets.

Jacob Phillips also claimed silver medals in the 3200 (10:13.84) and 1600 (4:43.22), Thorne Pettigrew won bronze in the 800 (2:08.20) and Cody Jackson added a bronze in the long jump (21-4 3/4) for the Rockwall boys.

Rockwall's girls pole vaulters swept the vaulting medals, with Shelby Kennard earning gold (12-6), Alicia Janke silver (12-0) and Lindsay Loy bronze (10-6). Janke and Loy both posted new PRs in the event and Janke also earned a second silver medal in the high jump (4-10).
