Obituaries for the week of May 9

James Bearden



James Alfred Bearden of Rockwall, previously of Mabank and Athens, died May 1, 2008.

He was born Jan. 13, 1943, to James Clifford and Addie Lee (Holloway) Bearden. James served in the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam.

James is survived by his mother: Addie Lee Maupin of Rockwall; a sister, Janie Sharber Hedgpeth and husband Jim of Rockwall; daughter Patty Schunatz and husband Mark of Caddo Mills; grandson Colby; nephews Jason, Jevin, and Justin Sharber, and Tristen Hawkins; and nieces Kim Hawkins and Krystal and Suzy Behling.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, in 1990; his stepfather, Ray Maupin in 2007; and a niece, Carolyn Horsley-Behling in 1993.

Services were held at 2 p.m., May 5, at Rest Haven Memorial Park with Chaplain Fred Bacon officiating.

‘Earl’ Slaughter



R.E. “Earl” Slaughter of Rockwall died May 5, 2008.

He was born Dec. 6, 1925, in Edgewood to John Arthur Sr. and Flora Anne (Cox) Slaughter. Mr. Slaughter was a 1943 graduate of Edgewood High School and a 1949 graduate of the University of Texas School of Pharmacy. He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Slaughter married Yvonne McMurray on Sept. 14, 1947, in Denton. He was the owner of Rockwall Drug for more than 30 years, a member of the Texas Pharmacy Association, and a Pharmacist for more than 50 years. Mr. Slaughter was the past president of the Rockwall Independent School District and the Chamber of Commerce. He was on the City Planning/Zoning Board, and received the Soroptomist Man of the Year Award in 2003. Mr. Slaughter was a member of the First United Methodist Church, active in the American Legion and the Lions Club, and enjoyed golfing.

Mr. Slaughter is survived by his wife of Rockwall; daughters Cathy Slaughter of Rockwall and Betsy Blundell and husband Billy of Rowlett; sons Richard Slaughter of Rockwall, Scott Slaughter and wife Carol of Austin, and Dean Slaughter of The Colony; a sister, Ann Gilbert and husband Reggie of Longview; 10 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 2 p.m., May 7, at First United Methodist Church in Rockwall with Dr. Joe Pool officiating.

Rest Haven Funeral Home-Rockwall chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the church building fund.

Patsy Johnson



FARMERSVILLE — Patsy Jean Johnson, 76, of Rockwall died May 5, 2008, in Doctor’s Hospital in Dallas. Funeral services were at 11 a.m., May 8, in the Hurst’s Fielder-Baker Funeral Home chapel with Rev. David Meeks and Rev. Billy Harris officiating. Burial followed in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Farmersville.

Daughter of George and Rolene Cantrell Wilcoxson, she was born Nov. 23, 1931, in Nocona. She worked for Willis Jewelry in Rockwall and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Farmersville.

Survivors are special friend Joe Ford of Rockwall; a daughter, Leslie Lovingood of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; brother Jerry Travis Wilcoxson of Wills Point; and two grandchildren, Eliza Ritchie of Wake Forrest, N.C., and Austin Ritchie of Mount Pleasant, S.C.

Travis Pugh



Travis W. Pugh, 71, of Rockwall died May 6, 2008.

He was born Aug. 27, 1936, in Whelan Springs, Ark., to Benjamin and Muriel (Wilson) Pugh. Mr. Pugh was a graduate of Bastrop High School (Louisiana) and Louisiana State School of Banking. He retired as executive vice president of Citizens State Bank in Princeton and was the former president of banks in Sterlington and Tallulah, La. Mr. Pugh was a member of Lake Pointe Church, and of the Stevens/Webster Adult Bible Fellowship Class.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne (Cockrell) Pugh of Rockwall; sons Mike Pugh and wife Cheryl of Rowlett, Kelly Pugh and wife Unaka of Spring, Mark Pugh and wife Joan of Bastrop, La., and Joel Pugh and wife Jeannie of Dallas; a sister, Nancy Bridges and husband DeWayne of Bastrop, La.; grandchildren Derek and wife Lindsay, Lauren, Brian, Hannah, Megan, Maura, Natalie, Ryne, and Taylor; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mr. Pugh was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. today at the Lake Pointe Church Chapel in Rockwall with Bro. Bill Stevens and Bro. Red Webster officiating. Interment will be in the Carter Cemetery in Bastrop, La.
